Jimmy Kimmel Live! and the ABC / Sinclair situation


 What happened

  • Jimmy Kimmel Live! had been suspended by ABC (owned by Disney) after Kimmel made controversial remarks about the death of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. These comments stirred backlash, particularly from conservative groups. 

  • ABC decided to bring the show back — it will return to its regular slot on Tuesday, September 23, 2025


 What Sinclair is doing

  • Sinclair Broadcast Group which owns many ABC affiliate stations, has said it will not air Jimmy Kimmel Live! on its stations, even after the show's return.

  • Instead, Sinclair plans to preempt the show, replacing it with news programming. 

  • Sinclair’s conditions: they want a formal apology from Kimmel, a personal donation to Charlie Kirk’s family / Turning Point USA, and a commitment to what they call "professionalism and accountability." .

     The Sinclair-owned ABC affiliate stations by call letters or markets that are refusing to air Jimmy Kimmel Live! as of now

    • Sinclair owns 38 ABC affiliate stations nationwide, and it has said all of them will be preempting Jimmy Kimmel Live! when it returns. 

    • In many places, people have noted local Sinclair ABC-stations are affected. For example, WJLA-TV in Washington, D.C. (a Sinclair station) is among those

    • One station in Portland, KATU (Sinclair-owned) is also noted in discussions as one that will not show the episode.
