Bhai Dooj 2025: Celebrating the Beautiful Bond Between Brothers and Sisters

Bhai Dooj, also known as Bhaiya Dooj, Bhau Beej, or Bhai Phonta in different regions of India, is a special Hindu festival that celebrates the eternal bond of love, care, and protection between brothers and sisters. It marks the fifth and final day of the Diwali festival and is celebrated with great enthusiasm across the country.

The word “Bhai” means brother, and “Dooj” signifies the second day after the new moon (Amavasya) in the Hindu lunar calendar. Thus, Bhai Dooj falls on the Dwitiya Tithi of the Shukla Paksha in the month of Kartika—usually two days after Diwali.

The Significance of Bhai Dooj

Bhai Dooj holds deep cultural and emotional meaning. According to Hindu mythology, the festival traces its roots to the story of Lord Krishna and his sister Subhadra. After Krishna defeated the demon Narakasura, Subhadra welcomed him with sweets and flowers, applied a ceremonial tilak on his forehead, and prayed for his long life and happiness.

Since then, Bhai Dooj has symbolized a sister’s prayers for her brother’s well-being, prosperity, and protection from all evils, while brothers promise to safeguard their sisters throughout their lives.

How Bhai Dooj is Celebrated

The celebration of Bhai Dooj varies across regions, but the essence remains the same everywhere—strengthening the sibling bond.

  • Rituals: Sisters invite their brothers to their homes, perform aarti, and apply a sacred tilak on their foreheads. In return, brothers give gifts or money as a token of love and affection.

  • Traditional Sweets: Delicious sweets like laddoos, barfis, kaju katli, and gulab jamuns are shared among family members.

  • Togetherness: It’s a day of laughter, nostalgia, and affection—where siblings reminisce about childhood memories and celebrate the joy of being family.

In Nepal, a similar festival called Bhai Tika is celebrated during Tihar, with sisters applying seven-colored tika on their brothers’ foreheads.
