Life & Career

D’Angelo was born on February 11, 1974, in Richmond, Virginia, and emerged as a prominent voice in the 1990s, eventually becoming one of the key figures behind the neo-soul movement.
His debut album, Brown Sugar (1995), was a critical and commercial success, blending classic soul elements with more modern R&B production, and helping introduce the neo-soul style to a wider audience.
In 2000, his sophomore album Voodoo further solidified his reputation. The lead single “Untitled (How Does It Feel)” and its striking minimalist video—featuring D’Angelo shirtless—became cultural touchstones.
After a long period away from the spotlight and amid personal struggles, D’Angelo made a powerful comeback in 2014 with Black Messiah, released unexpectedly amid social unrest in the U.S. The album was praised for its bold political and social commentary, as well as its musicianship.
Over his career, he earned 4 Grammy awards and multiple nominations, with recognition for both his vocal performances and albums.

His family announced that D’Angelo had been battling cancer, specifying pancreatic cancer, and had spent months in hospital care, with about two weeks in hospice before his passing.
He died on October 14, 2025, in New York City.
In their statement, his family said:

“The shining star of our family has dimmed his light for us in this life … After a prolonged and courageous battle with cancer … we are heartbroken … but eternally grateful for the legacy of extraordinarily moving music he leaves behind.”

He is survived by three children.

D’Angelo’s impact on modern R&B, soul, and black music more broadly is profound:

He merged elements of gospel, jazz, funk, and traditional soul into his own sound, often favoring live instrumentation over synthetic production.
His relatively sparse discography—just three albums released over 20+ years—meant each work carried immense weight and influence.
Many younger artists cite him as an influence, and his work is often studied for its emotional honesty, technical nuance, and boundary-pushing aesthetics.
Even in quieter years, he maintained relevance through collaborations, musical contributions (such as tracks for Red Dead Redemption 2), and public performances within select contexts.
