Mangold was drafted in the first round (29th overall) by the Jets in 2006 after a standout college career at Ohio State Buckeyes.

  • He spent his entire 11-season NFL career (2006-2016) with the Jets, starting 171 games and being selected to seven Pro Bowls and twice named First-Team All-Pro.

  • Known for his durability, leadership and consistency, he became a central figure of the Jets’ offensive line during their playoff runs under coach Rex Ryan.

  • In 2022 he was inducted into the Jets’ Ring of Honor.

  • Beyond the field, Mangold endeared himself to teammates, coaches and fans alike with his humor, character and loyalty. The Jets organisation described him as “the heartbeat of our offensive line … a cherished member of our extended Jets family.”

Health Battle & Final Days

  • In October 2025, Mangold publicly revealed that he had been diagnosed in 2006 with a genetic defect that led to chronic kidney disease. He wrote: "In 2006, I was diagnosed with a genetic defect that has led to chronic kidney disease… I’m undergoing dialysis as we look for a kidney transplant."

  • He appealed to the Jets and Ohio State communities asking for a kidney donor with type O blood, noting that no family member could donate.

  • Just days later, he succumbed to complications from the disease. His death came at a shockingly young age and has deeply impacted the football world.

Impact & Remembrance

  • Tributes poured in from former coaches, teammates and across the NFL. Many emphasised not just his greatness on the field, but his humanity off it.

  • He is survived by his wife Jenny and their four children — Matthew, Eloise, Thomas and Charlotte.

  • The circumstances of his passing have renewed attention on chronic kidney disease, organ donation and the importance of early health screening—even for elite athletes.

A Final Thought

Nick Mangold’s journey is a reminder that behind every athlete’s performance are human struggles, victories, and vulnerabilities. He gave his all—both on the gridiron and in his fight for health. The Jets, their fans, and the broader football community have lost a true leader and friend.

“Nick Mangold will forever be a Jet,” the Jets organisation stated, and his legacy will endure.
