IKE TURNER JR., GRAMMY WINNER DIES AT 67
Ike Turner Jr., Grammy Winner & Son of Ike and Tina Turner, Dies at 67
Music history lost one of its quiet pillars this weekend: Ike Turner Jr. — the son of rock & soul legends Ike and Tina Turner, and a Grammy-winning producer in his own right — passed away at age 67 on October 4, 2025, at a hospital in Los Angeles.
A Life Between Legacy and Struggle
Ike Turner Jr. (full name Izear “Ike” Turner Jr.) was born in 1958 to Ike Turner Sr. and Lorraine Taylor and was later adopted by Tina Turner following her marriage to Ike in 1962. From a young age, he was deeply steeped in the musical world: family, touring life, studios — all part of his upbringing.
While he never reached the same level of fame as his parents, Ike Jr. carved out a significant, if more understated, role in the music industry. He worked behind the scenes as a sound engineer, musician, producer, and in coordinating studio operations.
His most notable accolade came in 2007, when he produced Risin’ with the Blues — his father’s final studio album — which won the Grammy for Best Traditional Blues Album.
The Final Years and Cause of Death
According to family and media reports, Ike Jr.’s health had been on a decline for years. He battled chronic heart issues, and earlier this year he suffered a stroke (in early September) that worsened his condition.
His death was attributed to kidney failure, following complications from his deteriorating health.
Family, Estrangements & Tragedies
The Turner family’s life has long been marked by both creative brilliance and painful personal history. The decades-long album of splits, reconciliation, and distance extended into Ike Jr.’s own relationships with his mother and siblings.
In previous interviews, Ike Jr. acknowledged a strained relationship with Tina Turner in later years, stating that she had not communicated with him in some time.
His passing also adds to a sequence of sorrow in the Turner lineage:
-
His brother Craig died by suicide in 2018.
-
His brother Ronnie Turner, Tina’s son with Ike Sr., passed away in December 2022 from complications related to colon cancer.
-
Tina Turner herself died in 2023 at age 83.
With Ike Jr.’s passing, the only surviving child of Tina Turner is Michael Turner, whom she also adopted.
Legacy & Reflection
Though Ike Turner Jr. operated more often behind the scenes than in the glare of the stage, his work had tangible impact — especially through Risin’ with the Blues, which helped preserve and celebrate his father’s late-career voice in the blues genre.
His life and death also shine a light on the challenges faced by children of legendary figures: navigating expectations, legacy, familial tension, and personal health battles. In many ways, Ike Jr.'s story underscores how musical dynasties don’t come without hidden costs.
As the world mourns his passing, his contribution to the Turner family’s musical heritage—especially in quieter, technical, production roles—will be a reminder that behind every great name, many unseen figures help shape the sound we hear.
