Terry Rozier’s case

  • Rozier, currently with the Miami Heat, is among the six individuals charged in one of the investigations. 

  • The core incident: On March 23, 2023, when he was with the Charlotte Hornets, sportsbooks detected unusual bets on the “under” for his combined points, rebounds and assists. 30 bets in 46 minutes, about US $13,759 placed by a professional bettor.

  • He left that game early (approx 10 minutes in) citing a foot injury — the bets all hit.

  • The NBA conducted its own investigation at the time and found no violation of league rules. 

  • However, the federal probe (Eastern District of New York) remained active.

  • On October 23, 2025, Rozier was arrested in Orlando in connection with the illegal sports‐betting scheme. 

  • His lawyers say he was cleared by the NBA and argue prosecutors are relying on “spectacularly incredible sources”. 

Chauncey Billups’s case

    Billups, currently head coach of the Portland Trail Blazers and NBA Hall of Famer, was arrested as part of a related but separate scheme. 

  • His case involves an underground illegal poker ring tied to organized crime families in New York. The scheme reportedly used rigged tables (x-ray tables, fraudulent shufflers) and defrauded unsuspecting players. 

  • The poker scheme involved 31 defendants; Billups’s case is distinct but connected via broader gambling investigations.

  • In total, “more than 30 individuals” are charged across these two federal investigations — one focused on insider sports‐betting (including Rozier) and one on rigged poker games (including Billups). 

  • According to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Director Kash Patel, the schemes represent “one of the most brazen sports-corruption cases since online sports betting became widespread in the U.S.”

  • The investigation also connects to alleged organized crime (families like Bonanno, Genovese, Lucchese, etc).

  • Betting patterns appear to have been manipulated through insider info (in the sports-betting scheme) and rigged games (in the poker scheme).
