Storm Claudia

The Met Office has issued amber warnings for heavy and persistent rain across parts of England and Wales as Storm Claudia moves in
-
The affected regions include Wales, the Midlands, the South-West, the South-East and East of England.
-
Rainfall totals are expected to be very high: some areas of England may see up to ~80 mm, while higher ground in Wales could receive 100-150 mm or more during the event.
-
The rain will fall on already saturated ground, increasing the risk of flooding.
-
Strong easterly winds and potential thunderstorms will add to the hazards: gusts up to 60-70 mph may occur in exposed places.
Why it's worrying
-
Surface-water and river flooding: With so much rain in a short period and ground already soaked, rivers and water-courses are more likely to overflow and cause flooding.
-
Travel and infrastructure disruption: Flooded roads, reduced visibility, fast-flowing water and high winds may lead to road closures, rail delays and power cuts.
-
Danger to life: The Met Office highlights the risk of fast‐flowing or deep floodwater, which can be deceptive and hazardous.
What you should do
If you’re in the affected zones:
-
Check local weather warnings and stay updated.
-
Avoid non-essential travel during heavy downpours. If you must travel, plan ahead and check for disruptions.
-
Never drive or walk through flood water — even shallow looking water can hide hazards and strong currents.
-
For those in flood-prone areas: consider moving valuables to higher ground, prepare a basic flood kit with documents, torch, warm clothes.
-
Be mindful of the wind hazard as well: loose objects, tree branches, and coastal effects may amplify risks.
-
Stay in contact with neighbours or vulnerable persons who may need help if flooding strikes.
Outlook
Storm Claudia’s main impact is expected Friday into early Saturday. After the worst of the rain clears, northern parts of the UK will see drier and colder conditions, though residual rain and flooding risks may persist in some places.
