Brown University on Lockdown as Police Hunt Suspect After Deadly Campus Shooting
A mass shooting occurred on Saturday afternoon, Dec. 13, 2025, at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, inside the Barus & Holley engineering building during final exams.
The gunman opened fire in a classroom and at least two people were killed and nine others wounded, most of whom were students.
Emergency alerts were sent to campus directing people to shelter in place as law enforcement responded.
Manhunt & Suspect Details
No suspect has been arrested and the shooter remains at large.
Police described the suspect as a male wearing dark or black clothing, and authorities released video footage of someone believed to be the shooter leaving the scene.
Investigators have not yet identified the shooter or recovered the weapon used.
A massive manhunt involving local, state, and federal law enforcement — including the FBI and ATF — is underway to locate and apprehend the individual.
Campus & Community Response
A shelter-in-place order was issued for Brown University and surrounding areas; students and campus residents were urged to stay indoors and lock doors.
Streets and buildings around campus were secured, and emergency vehicles filled the area as officers combed nearby neighborhoods.
University officials moved students to secure locations and offered support services for those affected.
