  • British-Nigerian heavyweight boxing star Anthony Joshua, 36, was involved in a serious car accident on December 29, 2025, in Ogun State, Nigeria. The crash occurred on the busy Lagos-Ibadan Expressway near Sagamu, a major route linking Lagos with inland cities. 

Crash Details

  • Joshua was a passenger in a Lexus SUV traveling with others when the vehicle lost control and collided with a stationary truck. 

  • Local authorities and Nigeria’s Federal Road Safety Corps say the SUV was reportedly traveling at high speed while overtaking when the collision happened.

Fatalities and Injuries

  • Two people in the vehicle were killed at the scene. Officials have since identified them as Sina Ghami and Kevin “Lateef” Ayodele, both close friends and integral members of Joshua’s boxing team. 

  • Anthony Joshua sustained only minor injuries. He was conscious and taken to a hospital for evaluation and treatment in stable condition. Another person in the vehicle was also injured, while two others escaped unharmed. 

Joshua’s Condition

  • Official statements indicate Joshua did not require emergency surgery and is being monitored in a medical facility. Promoter Eddie Hearn and Nigerian authorities have both expressed support and well-wishes for his recovery. 

  • Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu personally reached out to Joshua and extended his condolences.

Context & Reaction

  • The accident happened just days after Joshua’s high-profile sixth-round knockout win over Jake Paul in Miami on December 19, 2025. Jake Paul publicly offered support on social media, saying, “Life is much more important than boxing” and expressing prayers for those affected.
