Canadian ex-Olympic snowboarder arrested after fall from athlete to most wanted fugitive

The  Arrest of Ryan Wedding, the former Olympic snowboarder who became one of the FBI’s most-wanted fugitives

Ryan James Wedding, a Canadian former Olympic snowboarder allegedly behind one of the most violent drug trafficking organizations.On January 22–23, 2026, officials confirmed that Ryan Wedding was arrested in Mexico and subsequently transported to the United States to face federal charges. Authorities say he either surrendered at the U.S. Embassy in Mexico City or was apprehended by law enforcement there after years on the run. 

Ryan James, age 44, is a Canadian former Olympic snowboarder who represented Canada in the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, competing in the men’s parallel giant slalom. After his athletic career, U.S. and Canadian authorities allege he turned to organized crime and built an international drug trafficking empire. 

Alleged Criminal Enterprise & FBI Most Wanted

Wedding was charged in 2024 by the U.S. Department of Justice with leading a transnational drug trafficking network that transported massive quantities of cocaine — reportedly around 60 metric tons per year — from Colombia through Mexico to the U.S. and Canada, generating over $1 billion annually in illegal proceeds. Authorities believed he operated under the protection of the Sinaloa Cartel

He was added to the FBI’s Ten Most Wanted Fugitives list in March 2025, with the bureau offering up to $15 million for information leading to his capture. 

Wedding was also accused of ordering multiple murders, including the killing of a U.S. federal witness in Medellín, Colombia, in January 2025 before that person could testify against him.
