Mexico earthquake: 6.5-magnitude struck Mexico and interrupted the president’s press conference

Powerful 6.5-Magnitude Earthquake Shakes Mexico

  • A strong earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.5 struck southern and central Mexico early Friday morning, centering near San Marcos in Guerrero state, close to the Pacific coast and the tourist city of Acapulco. The quake hit at about 07:58 local time (CST) and was felt strongly in Mexico City and other regions, triggering emergency alarms and widespread shaking.

Press Conference Interrupted

  • President Claudia Sheinbaum was holding her first press briefing of the year at the National Palace in Mexico City when the earthquake alarms sounded, forcing a temporary halt to her remarks. In live footage, sirens blared and Sheinbaum calmly signaled for journalists and staff to evacuate the room as the tremor was felt.

  • After a brief pause and ensuring safety, the conference resumed once the shaking subsided.

Impacts and Reports from the Ground

  • Authorities and local media reported strong tremors in Mexico City, prompting residents to evacuate buildings and step into the streets. Preliminary national seismological updates indicate aftershocks following the main quake, though detailed damage assessments are ongoing.

  • Some reports indicate structural damage in Guerrero and Mexico City, including landslides, damaged hospital infrastructure, and minor collapses of ceilings or walls. Tragically, at least two people died in quake-related incidents — one from a home collapse near the epicenter and another during evacuation in Mexico City.
