2026 Winter Olympics opening ceremony as Italy gears up to officially launch the Milan-Cortina Games on February 6, 2026
Organizers are in the final stretch of preparations for a historic and highly theatrical opening ceremony in Milan’s San Siro Stadium, set for the evening of February 6. The theme — “Harmony” (Armonia) — celebrates the union of city and mountain cultures and the Olympic spirit of inclusion and peace. Performers include internationally known artists alongside Italian stars, promising a show that blends culture, music and spectacle.
For this Games, organizers are innovating: athletes will participate from multiple venues — including Cortina d’Ampezzo, Livigno, and Predazzo — meaning the opening experience will unfold across several locations at once.Final Rehearsals Underway
More than 1,300 cast members and volunteers from 27 countries are in final rehearsals, refining choreography, music and synchronized segments across the various sites. Creative director Marco Balich leads the production, emphasizing Italy’s cultural heritage and contemporary creativity.
Tradition Meets Innovation
In a break with Olympic tradition, there will be two cauldrons lit simultaneously — one in Milan and another in Cortina d’Ampezzo — reflecting the dual nature of these Games and Italy’s geographical diversity.
Legendary Italian skiing champions, such as Alberto Tomba and Deborah Compagnoni, are expected to play key ceremonial roles in lighting Olympic flames, bringing homegrown sporting icons into the spotlight.
Flag Bearers and Athletes
National teams are completing their own preparations. For example, the United States team has announced its Opening Ceremony flag bearers, speedskater Erin Jackson and bobsledder Frank Del Duca, who will lead their delegation into San Siro.
