Andrew Latest: Mountbatten-Windsor Released After 11 Hours of Questioning

Prince Andrew, now known as Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, has been released under investigation after spending around 11 hours in police custody, marking a dramatic new chapter in the ongoing scrutiny surrounding the former British royal.

Mountbatten-Windsor was arrested on February 19, 2026—his 66th birthday—by detectives on suspicion of misconduct in public office. The arrest took place at his residence on the Sandringham estate in Norfolk, England. Officers carried out searches at multiple locations, including his former home at Royal Lodge in Berkshire.

Police confirmed that a man in his sixties from Norfolk had been detained and later released under investigation after extensive questioning. No formal charges have been filed at this stage, but authorities said inquiries are continuing. 

The case is reportedly linked to newly released documents connected to disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein. The allegations suggest that during his time as the UK’s trade envoy between 2001 and 2011, Mountbatten-Windsor may have shared confidential government or diplomatic information with Epstein.

Emails and correspondence uncovered in recently released files are believed to have prompted the investigation. Authorities are examining whether this conduct could amount to misconduct in public office—a serious offence under UK law.

King Charles III issued a public statement expressing “deep concern” over the situation and emphasized that the legal process must be allowed to proceed. The monarch also pledged full cooperation with investigators.

The arrest reportedly took Buckingham Palace by surprise, and it represents one of the most significant modern crises for the British monarchy. Analysts say the scandal could have long-lasting implications for public trust in the royal institution. 

This marks the first arrest of a senior modern British royal and reflects growing pressure for transparency and accountability.
