Retired WNBA Star Kara Braxton Dies at 43 After 1-Car Crash

Former Kara Braxton, a two-time WNBA champion with the Detroit Shock, has died at the age of 43 following a single-vehicle accident, police confirmed. The shocking news has prompted tributes from across the basketball world, with fans and former teammates remembering her impact on and off the court.

Authorities say Braxton was involved in a one-car crash in the Atlanta area on February 21, 2026. According to police, she was driving northbound on Interstate 285 when her vehicle reportedly lost control and struck a concrete median wall before coming to a stop. She was transported to a nearby hospital, where she was pronounced dead. The incident remains under investigation, and officials have asked witnesses to come forward. 

No official medical cause of death has yet been released, and investigators are continuing to examine the circumstances surrounding the crash. 

Braxton enjoyed a successful 10-season career in the WNBA, becoming one of the most respected front-court players of her era. Standing 6-foot-6, she was known for her strength, defense, and rebounding ability.

She was selected seventh overall in the 2005 WNBA Draft and earned All-Rookie honors during her debut season. Over the years, she played for several teams, including the Phoenix Mercury and the New York Liberty, before retiring in 2014.

Her biggest achievements came with Detroit, where she helped the franchise win WNBA championships in 2006 and 2008. She was also named a WNBA All-Star in 2007, cementing her status as one of the league’s top centers.

Before turning professional, Braxton starred at the University of Georgia, where she was named SEC Freshman of the Year in 2002 and became a standout player in college basketball. Her dominant performances made her one of the most sought-after prospects in the WNBA draft. 

Braxton is survived by her husband, Jarvis Jackson, and two sons, including college football player Jelani Thurman. Her family, along with teammates and fans, have shared emotional tributes on social media, remembering her as a loving mother and fierce competitor.
