US-Israel strikes on Iran and the reported killing of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, including fresh waves of attacks aimed at Iran

  • A coordinated military campaign by the United States and Israel, named Operation Epic Fury, has unleashed large-scale air and missile strikes on Iranian military and strategic sites. These are described as some of the most ambitious joint attacks in decades. Multiple waves of strikes continued into Sunday, with Israel reporting further attacks on Iranian ballistic missile and air-defense infrastructure. Iranian state media also reported hearing explosions in Tehran as the bombardment persisted.

  • Iranian state media confirmed that Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, 86, was killed in the strikes, triggering an official 40-day mourning period and seven days of public holidays.

  • The U.S. and Israeli governments had earlier said the strikes targeted his compound as part of the broader campaign, citing strategic objectives to neutralise nuclear and missile threats.

  • Some reporting still notes initial uncertainty from Iranian officials before confirmation, illustrating the fluidity of information.

  • In response to the initial strikes, Iran launched hundreds of missiles and drones at Israeli territory and U.S. military positions in Gulf states. These include sites in Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar and the UAE.

  • Regional air-defences engaged many incoming projectiles, and there have been reports of civilian casualties and infrastructure damage in various cities.

  • U.S. officials, including President Donald Trump, have framed the operation as essential to eliminating what they say are existential threats from Iran’s missile and nuclear programmes. Trump explicitly justified the strikes as a long-term security measure and urged the Iranian people toward political change.

  • Israel stated that the strikes focused on degrading Iran’s strategic capabilities and leadership command.

  • The strikes and retaliation have sharply heightened regional tensions and sparked warnings from world leaders about the risk of broader conflict. Global oil markets are already reacting, with fears over disruptions at the Strait of Hormuz—a critical passage for energy exports.

  • The UN and some governments have called for de-escalation and restraint as civilian impacts mount and diplomatic channels struggle to respond.
