London’s Burning actor John Alford, 54, dies in prison
British actor John Alford, best known for his roles in the TV dramas London's Burning and Grange Hill, has died at the age of 54 while serving a prison sentence, according to UK authorities.
He was found dead in his cell at HMP Bure prison in Norfolk, England, on March 13, 2026, only a few months after being jailed. Officials confirmed that an investigation has been launched into the circumstances of his death.
Prison staff reportedly discovered Alford unresponsive in his cell when they attempted to wake him. Emergency services were called, but he was pronounced dead shortly afterward.
As is standard procedure for deaths in custody, the UK Prisons and Probation Ombudsman has opened an investigation to determine the exact cause of death.
Authorities have not yet publicly confirmed whether the death was due to natural causes, suicide, or another factor.
Alford had recently been sentenced to eight and a half years in prison after being convicted of sexual offenses involving two teenage girls.
The case related to incidents at a party in Hertfordshire in 2022, where he was found guilty of:
Sexual activity with a 14-year-old girl
Assault involving a 15-year-old girl
The court heard the victims had been drinking alcohol before the assaults occurred.
Alford denied the accusations during the trial, claiming he had been set up, but a jury ultimately convicted him in 2025.
Born John James Shannon in Glasgow, Scotland, Alford became a well-known TV star in the 1980s and 1990s.
His career highlights included:
Playing Robbie Wright in Grange Hill (1985–1990)
Portraying firefighter Billy Ray in London’s Burning (1993–1998)
Releasing a pop album and several UK chart singles in the 1990s
At the peak of his fame, the shows he appeared in attracted millions of viewers across the UK.
Alford’s life was marked by several legal issues before the latest conviction.
Notably:
1999: Convicted of supplying drugs after a newspaper sting operation
2006: Convicted of drink-driving after a crash
2019: Admitted resisting arrest in a separate case
These controversies significantly affected his acting career.
UK prison authorities say more details about Alford’s death will become clear once:
A post-mortem examination is completed
The Prisons and Probation Ombudsman investigation concludes
Such investigations are mandatory whenever someone dies while in custody.
